1. Is marijuana addictive?

A. You can be physically dependent on marijuana and experience withdrawal symptoms when you quit using it. Withdrawal symptoms may include: insomnia, problems concentrating, and mood swings. You can also be psychologically dependant on marijuana. This means that you feel you need it as part of your life and you have a hard time imagining your life without it.

2. Is there a place where youth can get treatment even if they don't want treatment?

A. The Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre offers the DAWN® Program which provides educational information regarding substance use/abuse to youth who are not currently interested in seeking drug and alcohol counseling.

3. Do youth need to be in treatment in order to attend the Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre School?

A. To participate in the Centre's school program, youth must first be involved in some form of counseling program at the Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre.

4. What are some of the warning signs that a youth may be using drugs?

A. The following are possible warning signs, but remember, teens go through many changes and there may be other causes for the behavior you're seeing.

  • The child shows a sudden change in behavior or attitude
  • The child exhibits a lack of interest in personal hygiene or grooming
  • The child looses interest in hobbies or sports
  • The child may become more secretive, or less helpful at home, or tells stories that don't add up
  • School grades drop, or you find money missing
  • The child has a new group of friends, or doesn't bring friends home any more
  • The child becomes lethargic, erratic,
