The
Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre came into being, thanks to a group
of dedicated parents and community leaders spearheaded by Dave Smith.
This group lobbied to secure base operational funding support from
the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and also raised funds
from the community to purchase a building.
With little fanfare, enthusiastic staff, and high hopes, the Centre
first opened its doors in March 1993.
The
services of the Centre are unique in our community. Nowhere else
can Ottawa region English-speaking youth attend a full five day
per week program receiving both substance abuse counselling and an
academic program. Through our on-site school, youth are able to
obtain academic credits while participating in our Day Program.
Similarly, the Centre is the sole substance abuse treatment service
provider to five francophone schools. The Centre also offers Assessment;
substance abuse education programs; a francophone early intervention
program; a Peer Pow-R program; Treatment Planning; Continuing Care
and a parent education/support program.
Services
are available free of charge to any youth or parent in our community
who needs it. The Centre began by providing assistance to some 120
youth and parents, and today, with much creativity and commitment,
assists over 700 clients per year. Each day brings us new challenges
to overcome, and new opportunities to reach a youth and transform
a life.
